Single Out The Moment
“Remind yourself that it is not the future or what has passed that afflicts you, but always the present, and the power of this is much diminished if you take it in isolation and call your mind to task if it thinks that it cannot stand up to it when taken on its own.”
—Marcus Aurelius
Meditations
It's not the worries of tomorrow or the regrets of yesterday that truly disturb us, but rather the challenges and emotions we're faced with right now.
This moment—the present—is where life actually happens, it's where we have the power to act.
But your mind might trick you into thinking that this moment is insurmountable. Question that thought. When you isolate this singular moment, can you not endure it, just as you've withstood countless such moments before? Life is a series of nows, not an overwhelming continuum.
Catch yourself when you drift into anxiety about the future or lamentations of the past. Right now, as you read this, can you address what is in front of you? Can you focus on this task, this conversation, this breath?
By zeroing in on the present, you'll likely find that what seemed an unbearable weight is merely a manageable situation, a single step to take.
What's the 'present' you're facing today? Is it really too much to handle on its own, or does it just seem that way when piled up with the infinite possibilities of what could be or the immovable history of what has been?
