Death Is Freedom
“Death is a release from the impressions of the senses, and from desires that make us their puppets, and from the vagaries of the mind, and from the hard service of the flesh.”
—Marcus Aurelius
Meditations
Death is not just an end, but a release from the constant demands of our physical and emotional selves.
Every day, our senses bombard us with information, our desires pull us in different directions, and our minds toss and turn with endless thoughts. We're like marionettes, often controlled by the craving for more or the stress of our own expectations. Think about it: how often do your desires dictate your actions, rather than your reasoned choices?
Now consider how this perspective can offer comfort in the face of life's chaos.
Death, in its finality, is freedom from these worldly struggles. While we can’t control when or how death will come, we can control how we live amidst the 'hard service of the flesh.'
Can you find moments in your daily life to let go of the strings, to be the master of your senses and desires, rather than the puppet? Maybe it’s through pausing in moments of frustration, taking a breath and stepping back from the heat of desire, or simply being mindful.
By practicing detachment now, we can live with a peace that many only ascribe to death—a peace born of clarity and self-mastery.
