See Them As They Are

September 11th

“How good it is when you have roast meat or suchlike foods before you, to impress on your mind that this is the dead body of a fish, this is the dead body of a bird or pig. And again, that fine wine is the mere juice of grapes, and your purple edged robe simply the hair of a sheep soaked in shell-fish blood! And in sexual intercourse that it is no more than the friction of a membrane and a spurt of mucus ejected.”

—Marcus Aurelius

Meditations

Imagine you're about to indulge in a delicious meal or savor the luxuries of life.

Before you take that bite or slip into the comfort of material pleasures, take a moment to consider the nature of what's before you. That succulent piece of meat? It's the flesh of a once-living creature. The fine wine? Simply fermented grape juice.

This exercise isn't meant to disgust you, but to ground you in reality and to undercut the pretenses and stories you tell yourself about the importance of these pleasures. How might this shift in perception change the way you approach your next meal or luxury?

It’s easy to get swept up in the sensations and aesthetics of our experiences—the flavor of a gourmet dinner, the allure of designer clothing, or the thrill of intimacy.

But remember that these are just elemental things and acts. What if you saw that exclusive, costly outfit as simply dyed threads? Would you still value it the same? Or if you recognized an intimate encounter as a mere physical exchange, could this change your understanding of what's truly meaningful in a relationship?

By adopting this perspective, you exercise control over the impressions these pleasures create in your life, preventing them from having undue influence on you.

So, the next time you encounter a supposed luxury, ask yourself: What is it, truly?
