Control The Urge

August 8th

“It is recorded that Socrates was able both to abstain from, and to enjoy, the things that many are too weak to abstain from and cannot enjoy without excess. But to be strong enough both to bear the one, and to be sober in the other, is the mark of one who has a perfect and invincible soul.”

—Marcus Aurelius

Meditations

There is a balance that few can strike: to enjoy life's pleasures without getting carried away and also to resist temptations when necessary.

To have this kind of self-control is to possess an unbreakable spirit. Reflect on your day-to-day life. Can you enjoy a piece of chocolate without devouring the entire bar, or take a single day off without binging an entire TV series?

Applying this wisdom is about finding your own version of moderation and resilience. It's saying 'no' when it's easier to say 'yes,' and equally, savoring the moment without overindulgence.

As you go about daily tasks, challenge yourself. Could you be more like Socrates when offered a dessert, an impulse buy, or the call of a soft bed?

Remember, it's not just about restriction or gratification—it's about mastering both and in doing so, fortifying your soul.
