The Clock Is Ticking
“Do not act as if you had ten thousand years to throw away. Death stands at your elbow. Be good for something while you live and it is in your power.”
—Marcus Aurelius
Meditations
Imagine if every morning you were given $10,000 to spend with one catch: you can't keep any of it for the next day; it's use it or lose it.
That's kind of like our time here on Earth.
Marcus reminds us that death is like a silent companion, always there but seldom acknowledged. We're not guaranteed a century, a decade, or even another day. So why do we often act as though our time is limitless? When we procrastinate or mindlessly scroll through our phones, aren't we just throwing away precious currency that we can never get back?
How are you spending your daily $10,000? Are your actions contributing to something meaningful, something you'd be proud to purchase with your time?
It’s easy to get caught in the trap of thinking we can start living our true life later, but the Stoics would scoff and urge us to seize the present. Your next choice, your next action—will it be something good, something worthwhile?
Take a moment to ponder what 'being good for something' looks like to you. Marcus encourages us not just to live, but to live with purpose, while it's in our power to do so.
Tomorrow isn't guaranteed. So what can you do today to make sure you're not just existing, but truly living?
