Avoid Ignorance
“Avoid banquets which are given by strangers and by ignorant persons. But if there is ever occasion to join them, let your attention be carefully fixed, that you slip not into the manner of the vulgar and uninstructed.”
—Epictetus
Enchiridion
Be mindful of the company you keep, especially in social settings.
Ever been at a party where everyone seems to be indulging a little too much, gossiping, or losing their sense of decorum?
It's easy to get swept up in the energy of the crowd. Epictetus warns us against attending gatherings hosted by those we don't know well or by those who may not share our values. The buffet of behaviors at such events can be enticing but feasting on them can lead us away from our principles.
Now, think about the last social event you attended. Was it in line with your values, or did you find yourself slipping into habits you're not proud of?
Life will sometimes place us at these very banquets, whether it be a work obligation or a family event. When you find yourself in these settings, Epictetus advises us to be vigilant. Picture yourself as a boat carefully navigating through a treacherous harbor—steer clear of the rocks of vulgarity and the shallows of ignorance.
By remaining observant and true to your character, you become capable of enjoying social interaction without compromising your integrity.
Be the person at the banquet who maintains their composure and wisdom amid the revelry.
