It's All In Your Actions

July 21st

“The happiness and unhappiness of the rational, social animal depends not on what they feel but on what they do, just as their virtue and vice consist not in feeling but in doing.”

—Marcus Aurelius

Meditations

Happiness isn't about the warm fuzzies or the chill of dread we might feel in reaction to life's unpredictable dance.

It's rooted, instead, in our actions—what we choose to do with the cards we're dealt.

It's easy to think that satisfying every craving will lead to joy, or to believe that avoiding all discomfort will keep us content. But true happiness comes from acting in alignment with our values, from doing the right thing even when it's hard. It's not the fleeting satisfaction of an impulse indulged, but the deep fulfillment of a challenge faced and a contribution made.

So, what does this mean for you in your daily life? It means taking a step back before reacting based on how you feel. Feelings are signposts, but our true north should be our actions. Ask yourself, what's the virtuous thing to do here? Are you helping someone out despite being tired? Are you holding your tongue instead of lashing out in anger?

Remember, it's not the emotional rollercoaster that defines your character or your contentment, but the quality of your actions.

So next time you're caught in the grip of intense feelings, pause and consider: what action, here and now, embodies the person I aim to be?
