Go For Experience And Connection

July 18th

“In banquets remember that you entertain two guests: body and soul. And whatever you shall have given to the body, you soon eject. But what you shall have given to the soul, you keep always.”

—Epictetus

Enchiridion

Imagine sitting down at a dinner party, a table loaded with dishes that delight the senses.

You indulge, knowing well that the pleasure is fleeting. Now, Epictetus reminds us that we're always hosting two guests: our body and soul. What we feed our body—the rich foods and sweet treats—provides temporary satisfaction, soon forgotten after the last bite is digested. But what about your soul, that enduring guest who stays well beyond any feast?

What nourishment are you offering your soul? Is it a thoughtful conversation, a piece of music that stirs the heart, or maybe the joy of learning something new?

These are soul foods that linger, that grow within us and become part of who we are.

Next time you're choosing how to spend your evening or what to fill your leisure time with, ask yourself: am I just feeding my body with forgettable fillers, or am I giving something to my soul that it will cherish and hold onto long after the party's over?
