Don't Underestimate Passion

June 5th

“It is true, I know what evil I shall do, but passion overpowers the better council.”

—Epictetus

Discourses

Epictetus is getting real with us about the internal tug-of-war we all experience.

You know that voice in your head that tells you what the right thing to do is? Maybe it's whispering that you should work out, or stop procrastinating on that project, but then along comes a louder, more persuasive voice. That's passion, or emotion—tempting you to hit snooze, to scroll a little longer on your phone, or to indulge in gossip. It overpowers that wiser part of you like a tidal wave crashing over a sandcastle. How often do you let your emotions bulldoze your best intentions?

So, what's the game plan?

Next time you're faced with a choice and you feel that familiar surge of 'passion,' press pause. What's really steering the ship—your long-term well-being or a fleeting craving? Are you going to be the puppet of your passions or the master of your actions?

Remember, being aware of the battle is half the victory. Why not surprise yourself by choosing the wiser counsel you already possess? Show that passion who's boss by using your awareness to guide your next decision.

Imagine taking control back from those strong emotions, one choice at a time. How would that transform your day, your life?
