Pay No Mind To Haters
“Will anyone despise me? Let them see to it. But I will see to it that I may not be found doing or saying anything that deserves to be despised.”
—Marcus Aurelius
Meditations
There are only a few things truly within our control: our actions and our words.
You'll encounter times when others may judge or disparage you—that's outside your realm of power. What is in your hands, however, is the way you carry yourself. The measure of your worth isn't in others' opinions but in the integrity of your own conduct.
Why trouble yourself with the impossible task of controlling perceptions when you have the very possible task of controlling yourself?
Do you tend to react with haste and regret your words later? Do you make choices that you wouldn't be proud to admit? Perhaps, or perhaps not.
Either way, Marcus nudges us toward self-reflection and accountability. By vowing not to do or say anything that is beneath you, you set a standard that no external judgment can tarnish.
Next time you feel the sting of criticism or the pressure of others' disdain, ask yourself: Are you living up to your own highest standards? Focus there, and let the rest unfold as it may.
