Do What Is Right

May 26th

“When you do anything from a clear judgment that it ought to be done, never shrink from being seen to do it, even though the world should misunderstand it. For if you are not acting rightly, shun the action itself. If you are, why fear those who wrongly condemn you?”

—Epictetus

Enchiridion

We are often faced with decisions that others might not understand or support.

Epictetus encourages you to stand firm in your convictions, provided they come from a place of clear judgment and moral certainty. If you're contemplating whether you should act according to what you believe is right, take a moment to reflect. Does the action align with your fundamental values and principles? If the answer is a resounding yes, then have the courage to follow through—regardless of the opinions or judgments from those around you.

Now, flip the scenario. If there's hesitation because you're unsure of the righteousness of your act, that's an important signal to pause and reassess.

Stoicism teaches us that our integrity is paramount, and this hinges on our capacity to choose actions that are just and noble. If upon introspection, the action is not something you can fully endorse, then it’s time to step back.

Can you think of a time when you've acted out of alignment with your integrity for fear of judgment?

Remember, the ultimate judgment that matters is your own, guided by wisdom and virtue. Consider this as you go about your day, and let it empower you to live authentically, even in the face of misunderstanding or disapproval.
