Indulge With Caution

March 7th

“Check your passions that you may not be punished by them.”

—Epictetus

Enchiridion

It’s easy to become overwhelmed by strong feelings like anger, excitement, or even ambition. These intense emotions can lead to impulsive actions, clouded judgments, and unintended consequences. Think about the last time you made a decision in the heat of passion—did it bring you closer to the life you want, or did it complicate things?

In our daily lives, this means taking a step back when we feel our emotions surging. It's about practicing self-awareness, recognizing the rising tide of passion, and asking ourselves, "Is this feeling serving my well-being or hindering it?" By managing our passions, we make room for reasoned choices and deliberate actions.

For example, before responding in anger to a provoking email, take a moment to breathe and consider a more measured approach. This isn’t about suppressing emotions but rather about not letting them dictate our actions.

Have you ever noticed how a hasty reaction can set you back? How might your day change if you took a moment to check your passions before they check you?
