Plenty Of Time
“It is not that we have so little time but that we lose so much. The life we receive is not short, but we make it so. We are not ill-provided, but use what we have wastefully.”
—Seneca
Letters From A Stoic
Our complaint about lacking time is a smokescreen for our tendency to squander it.
Daily life is a whirlwind of notifications, to-do lists, and social obligations—where hours dissolve into a blur.
Think about it, how many minutes do we fritter away scrolling mindlessly through social media or indulging in distractions that, in hindsight, bring no real fulfillment or growth? Our time isn't slipping through our fingers because there isn't enough of it; we're simply letting it escape by not being intentional with how we use it.
Now, imagine refocusing that lost time like a craftsman shaping a precious material into a work of art. Consider the power in choosing activities that align with our deepest values—learning a new skill, bonding with loved ones, or contributing to a cause we care about.
The Stoics urge us to be more discerning about our commitments, to ask ourselves: does this serve my purpose, or is it just another way to waste the finite hours I've been given?
By being mindful and purposeful with our time, we can transform the seeming scarcity into abundance. Today, let's start by identifying one area where we are wasteful with our time, and let's take a small step towards a more deliberate use of the gift of life we have been granted.
