You Can't Stop Time
“How soon will time cover all things.”
—Marcus Aurelius
Meditations
Our worries, the stories we tell ourselves about successes and failures, and even the physical world around us will eventually be swept away by time's relentless march.
Think about the last argument you had or the mistake at work you're still stewing over—is it going to matter in a year, or ten years? Chances are, it will be completely forgotten, covered over by new experiences, just as layers of sediment settle over the relics of the past.
So, in recognizing the impermanence of everything, we're prompted to reassess what we give our energy to. If time will eventually cover all things, why not choose to spend our limited, precious moments on what truly enriches our lives and the lives of others?
Is there a grudge you're holding onto or a worry about the future that's stealing your present peace? Let Marcus's words be the gentle prod to let go, to forgive, to move past the trivial and to invest in the eternal—be it love, virtue, or wisdom.
Time will cover all things, yes, but the legacy of how we've treated others and ourselves will resonate far beyond our own lifespans.
