Your Only Possession

February 28th

“No one can lose either the past or the future. How could anyone be deprived of what they do not possess? It is only the present moment of which either stands to be deprived, and if this is all they have, they cannot lose what they do not have.”

—Marcus Aurelius

Meditations

Imagine you’re worrying about a mistake you made last week or fretting about a big presentation next month. Now pause and consider this: those moments are not in your possession right now. The past is untouchable, and the future is not yet within your grasp.

Marcus reminds us that our anxieties often focus on things we don't actually hold. We stress over memories and possibilities, yet in doing so, we miss what's right in front of us—the present.

What are you investing your energy in right now? Is it something that's beyond your control? Think about the task at hand today, maybe it's as simple as enjoying your coffee, completing a work assignment, or having a conversation with a friend. These are the moments that life is made of—the only ones you really have.

Your past victories and past mishaps, much like your future triumphs and tribulations, are not yours to lose because they're not in your possession.

If you can truly embrace the present, you cannot be deprived, for you are living with the only moment you truly own.
