Take The Reins

February 18th

“You need to avoid certain things in your train of thought: everything random, everything irrelevant. And certainly everything self-important or malicious. You need to get used to winnowing your thoughts, so that if someone says, "What are you thinking about?" you can respond at once (and truthfully) that you are thinking this or thinking that.”

—Marcus Aurelius

Meditations

Imagine your mind is like a garden. Now, think about how carefully you would tend to that garden, removing any weeds or debris that might choke out the healthy plants.

Marcus urges us just as actively to tend to our mental landscape, removing thoughts that are random or irrelevant, just like we'd pluck out weeds. We must be vigilant gardeners, ensuring that self-importance or malice doesn't take root. This isn't about suppression but about focus—choosing to cultivate thoughts that are beneficial and aligned with our values.

As you go through your day, what thoughts are you watering? Are they thoughts that will help you grow?

To apply this in your daily life, begin by noticing. Throughout your day, when your mind wanders, gently reel it back in. Ask yourself: "Is this thought productive? Does it help me or others?" It's like sorting through a stack of papers, deciding what to keep and what to toss. If you catch yourself dwelling on something that feels self-important or unkind, imagine setting it aside.

Picture yourself being able to answer Marcus's question with clarity and intention, saying, "I am thinking about my next step," or "I am reflecting on how I can be of service."

By doing this mental winnowing, not only do you become a master of your thought garden, but you cultivate a mind that is tidy, intentional, and truly your own.

What thoughts will you choose to nurture today?
