Hedge Your Bets

December 26th

“Neither should a ship rely on one small anchor, nor should life rest on a single hope.”

—Epictetus

Enchiridion

Just as a ship at sea wouldn't trust a single anchor to hold fast through every storm, we shouldn't hitch all our hopes to one prospect or plan.

Imagine grounding your entire happiness on a single event, like getting a dream job, only to be left adrift should the seas of fate change.

It's wise to diversify your hopes and anchor your well-being in different aspects of your life—family, passions, personal growth, health, and work—to remain resilient in the face of life's unpredictable tides. How else might you anchor your life to withstand the storms?

Life, much like the vast sea, is unpredictable and often out of our control. When we rely on one hope or dream, we become vulnerable to disappointment.

Broaden your horizon. What other hopes can you cultivate that align with who you are, and what you value?

Think about creating multiple sources of fulfillment in your life. Seek joy in the simple everyday moments, invest in relationships, and nurture a hobby or skill.

This way, even if one anchor slips, you have others that will secure you and keep your spirits buoyant.

Isn't it time to examine which hopes you've been clinging to, and where you might set down new anchors?
