Wisdom Builds Better Cities
“Do not decorate the walls of your house with the valuable stones from foreign lands, but adorn the minds and hearts of the citizens and of those who administer the state with wisdom. For states are well governed by the wisdom of mankind, but not by stone and wood.”
—Epictetus
Enchiridion
Imagine your living space, adorned with the most exotic and expensive stones from across the globe. It's impressive, sure, but does it truly enrich your life or the lives of those around you?
Epictetus is urging us to reconsider where we invest our efforts. Rather than in material opulence, he argues, we should invest in wisdom—the kind that supports and improves the lives of our community and our leaders.
When was the last time that the décor in your home initiated a meaningful conversation, or inspired someone to be a better person? Wisdom is the real treasure that can transform societies.
Think about how your daily actions and conversations can contribute to this. Are you sharing thoughts that enlighten and encourage better decision-making among your peers? Or are you simply complimenting someone's new hardwood floors?
Our communities flourish not because of physical adornments but through the ideas and kindness we exchange.
Next time you have the urge to impress with something material, ask yourself: could I instead share something invaluable from within—a piece of wisdom, a thoughtful action, or a word of encouragement?
Remember, it's not the stones and wood that hold up a society, but the wisdom upon which it's built.
