Choose To Be Free

November 17th

“For your part, do not desire to be a general, or a senator, or a consul, but to be free. And the only way to this is a disregard of things which lie not within our own power.”

—Epictetus

Enchiridion

In your journey through life, it's easy to get caught up in chasing titles, status, or prestige—be it climbing the corporate ladder, aiming for that "perfect" image on social media, or just trying to be the best parent on the block.

Epictetus calls us to shift our focus. Instead of longing for external validations that we often can't control, we should yearn for true freedom. This freedom comes from understanding that peace of mind and contentment are not tied to accolades or the opinions of others, but to our own inner attitudes.

Pause and consider: how much of your day is spent worrying about things outside your control? The opinions of your peers, the unpredictability of the market, or even the weather?

This desire for control is like holding onto water—ultimately futile and exhausting. To live freely, we need to release our grip on these externals and concentrate on what we can manage—our actions, choices, and responses to whatever life throws at us.

The next time you feel that tug of discontent or envy, remind yourself: freedom is not in having it all, but in mastering your own mind.
