Respect Your Own Authority

October 29th

“Your ability to control your thoughts—treat it with respect. It's all that protects your mind from false perceptions—false to your nature, and that of all rational beings.”

—Marcus Aurelius

Meditations

In your daily life, you're exposed to all sorts of external influences and, if you're not careful, it's easy to let them in, unfiltered.

Marcus reminds us of the power we hold: our ability to control our thoughts. Do you stop and consider that ability for what it truly is—your personal guard against falsehoods and distortions? This internal sentinel doesn't just protect you but it's also in line with your true nature.

Like putting on a pair of glasses, we can use our cognitive control to filter out misleading notions, to see the world as it truly is—rational and objective.

So, next time when a piece of gossip comes your way, a triggering news headline flashes across your screen, or a discouraging thought forms, will you let it color your view of the world, or will you exercise your power to question and analyze and see the situation for what it truly is?

It is a conscious choice we all can make.
