Avoid Nonsense And Seek Knowledge
“Not to waste time on nonsense. Not to be taken in by conjurors and voodoo artists, with their talk about incantations and exorcism and all the rest of it. Not to be obsessed with quail-fighting or other crazes like that. To hear unwelcome truths.”
—Marcus Aurelius
Meditations
Today, Marcus urges us to critically evaluate what we spend our time on. Are we consumed by mindless scrolling on social media, or perhaps falling for buzzwords and quick fixes offered by self-proclaimed 'gurus'?
Like the voodoo artists or the quail fighters of his time, modern distractors may seem intriguing, but we must ask ourselves: Are these activities genuinely enriching our lives? Or are they simply hi-tech, subtly sugarcoated variations of nonsense?
Hard truths might sting initially, but they help us course-correct. Think about it: Are we open to constructive criticism, or are we too enamored with comforting illusions?
Filtering out the nonsense and being brave enough to face the truths about ourselves might just be the antidotes to a cluttered life.
Like the Stoics, let's strive to focus on what truly matters and continue on our path to self-improvement.
