Tread With Care

October 25th

“When walking, you are careful not to step on a nail or turn your foot. So likewise, be careful not to hurt the ruling faculty of your mind. And, if we were to guard against this in every action, we should undertake the action with the greater safety.”

—Epictetus

Enchiridion

Just as you’re conscious about not stepping on a nail when you walk, try applying that same attention to your mind's ruling faculty—the part of your mind that directs your thoughts and actions.

Take for instance the decisions you make around work or how you respond to criticism—are these decisions rooted in careful judgement or impulsive reactions? Decisions made in the heat of the moment may feel good temporarily, but they all too often lead to further damage and regret.

Being mindful of these processes will give you a greater sense of security and control.
