Not Worth The Trouble

October 18th

“For outward show is a wonderful perverter of the reason, and when we are certain the things we are dealing with are worth the trouble, that is when it cheats us most.”

—Marcus Aurelius

Meditations

Consider a time when you were drawn to something solely because of its external charm. Maybe it was a car, a relationship, or a job offer.

Influenced by the outer appearance, you might have ignored the essential qualities residing under the surface. As the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20.

That's precisely what Marcus was warning himself—and by extension, us—about in this meditation. He suggests that obsessing over surface-level allure can lead us astray, clouding our judgment about what holds true worth in our lives.

Even though Marcus wrote these words thousands of years ago, this still holds true for us today where we're persistently bombarded with ads, social media competitiveness, and societal pressure to conform to certain standards or trends.

Take a moment to ask yourself: Am I choosing this because it benefits my life, adds value, or aligns with my values? Or am I falling prey to the charm of the outward show, the glitzy but possibly hollow promise it holds?

Remember, Marcus advises us not to shun the world's wonders, but to ensure we're not deceived by the superficial, leading us away from what truly matters.
