Everything Changes, Yet Repeats
“Observe constantly that all things take place by change, and accustom yourself to consider that the nature of the universe loves nothing so much as to change things which are, and to make new things like them.”
—Marcus Aurelius
Meditations
Life is an ever-flowing river of change, a constant state of becoming. Just as day turns into night and the seasons change from one to another, so does everything else around us.
How often do we fight this natural unfolding because of our inherent resistance to change? Marcus encourages us to constantly observe and embrace the fact that all things take place by change, to find comfort and harmony in its inevitable embrace.
Stoicism encourages resilience by teaching us that no matter how tied we are to our current ideas, situations or relationships, we must always be ready to accept change. To adapt, to evolve, is to survive.
We must not fear the new, but rather see it as the universe's way of setting out a new table from which we can feast. Are you holding on to an outdated belief about yourself? Are you afraid of pursuing a different career? Do you resist the changes that life presents, or do you welcome them as opportunities for growth and transformation?
Remember, change is not only an inevitable factor of existence but, as Marcus enlightens us, it could potentially be the universe’s most favored function.
