Make The Best Of It

October 16th

“All of us are creatures of a day. The rememberer and the remembered alike. All is ephemeral, both memory and the object of memory.”

—Marcus Aurelius

Meditations

Often times, it can be easy to fall into the trap of overemphasizing our own importance.

Marcus suggests that we, along with everything we do and everything we remember, are all transient entities, here for only a moment in the grand scheme of time.

Next time you're feeling overwhelmed or over-inflated by your own significance, consider the vastness of time and the fleeting nature of existence. Doesn't that put things in perspective?

Marcus urges us to stay humble and understand that both the memories we generate and the things we remember are equally ephemeral and short-lived. They have a finite existence, just like us.

This understanding can be incredibly liberating. Do you sometimes find yourself holding onto a past mistake or reliving an old achievement as if it defines you? Marcus’s words suggest we can let go. Even the sweetest or most bitter of our memories are, ultimately, just momentary and transient.

So, go ahead, breathe a little easier today. After all, why let ephemeral events define the full extent of your precious life?
