Trust And Remain Open

October 12th

“There are two things that must be rooted out in human beings: arrogant opinion and mistrust. Arrogant opinion expects that there is nothing further needed, and mistrust assumes that, under the torrent of circumstance, there can be no happiness.”

—Epictetus

Discourses

From Epictetus' quote, we start to see that our perspectives greatly shape our happiness and success.

Firstly, arrogance and complacency can taint the pathway to growth. If we believe we've figured everything out or that we are the epitome of perfection with no need for improvement, we lock ourselves in an unproductive cycle, undermining our potential for personal and professional development. Throughout your everyday life, try to always have an open mind, and embrace a learner's mindset.

Secondly, Epictetus warns against pessimism and chronic mistrust in the unfolding of events, as these breed unhappiness. While it's important to have your guards up and not be overly naive, it's equally crucial that you learn to have some degree of faith and optimism about life's possibilities. Don't allow constant skepticism of others' intentions or over-analyzing situations rob your capacity for joy. Seek balance, and try to focus more on the brighter side.

At the end of the day, your happiness is largely dependent on your outlook on life and your ability to adapt and find happiness in your circumstances, no matter how intense they may be.
