Find Strength In Gratitude

January 7th

“Fortify yourself with contentment, for this is an impregnable fortress.”

—Epictetus

Enchiridion

There is strength in being content. Think of contentment as a personal fortress that shields you from the constant bombardment of desires and dissatisfaction.

It's not about settling for less or ceasing to strive for better; it’s recognizing and appreciating what we have right now. When you're happy with who you are and what you have, you're less likely to be shaken by external pressures or the lure of what you don't have.

This doesn't mean you stop growing or improving, but you do so from a place of peace rather than absence.

Can you find contentment in your daily life, even if it's just being grateful for a peaceful moment or a small achievement?

As you go about your day, observe those moments when you feel restless or covetous—you know, when the neighbor's new car or a coworker's promotion causes that twinge of envy. Instead of succumbing to those feelings, retreat to your inner fortress of contentment. Remind yourself of your own accomplishments, the love you have, and the simple pleasures that bring you joy. By doing this, you'll find that these external events lose power over you.

You can't control everything that happens in life, but you can control how you react. Will you let the chaos in, or will you stand firm within your fortress, content and serene?
